It’s unclear when Ross’ casket will arrive in Gillette, said Pete Quinnell of the Wyoming Veterans Commission. He said it typically takes four to six days.

Ross graduated from Campbell County High School in 2008. He is survived by his parents, Dennis and Karen Ross, both of Gillette, and his wife, Brittney Oliver Ross, of Logansport,Indiana.

Jacob Ross served in Marine Weapons Company 2nd Battalion 2nd Regiment 2nd Division. He was killed in Garmsir District in southern Afghanistan. It wasn’t clear how he died.

Ross is the third Gillette-linked service member killed in action since 2005.

Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Zorn, 35, of Wright died Nov. 16, 2009, in a vehicle rollover near the northern Iraq town of Tal Afar.

Sgt. Kurt Schamberg, 26, of Orwell, Ohio, son of Pam Lindsay of Gillette, was killed May 19, 2005, by a roadside bomb in Iraq near the Abu Ghraib prison.

Since 2001, 27 other servicemen with Wyoming ties have been killed in action. All but two of those were in Iraq. The only other casualty in Afghanistan came in 2008 when Wyoming Army National Guard Bruce Hays of Cheyenne died.

As of March 19, at least 939 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to a count provided by The Associated Press.
