Robert K. "Bob" Nesbitt
January 05, 1915 - February 07, 2010
West Lafayette resident Bob Nesbitt died Sunday morning February 7, 2010.
Born January 5, 1915 to Claude Nesbitt and Nelle Davisson Nesbitt, Bob grew up on the family farm, enjoying a rural life that he cherished for the family love, disciplined work and knowledge of plants and animals. As a child, he attended Jackson Township Schools. He enjoyed Boy Scouts and 4-H as a boy, and he was a member of the Jackson Methodist Church. He grew up surrounded by an extended family of grandparents, aunts and uncles. He was graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1933, and attended Purdue University.
In 1939 Bob married Margaret Burghardt, who was also born and raised in Jackson Township. They set up housekeeping in Sioux City, Iowa, where he worked as a carpenter for Curtis Sash & Door. Burroughs Adding Machine Company recruited him to a position as a machinist, and as their family grew, he was promoted to positions in Lincoln, Nebraska; Royal Oak, Michigan; and Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. In Royal Oak Bob served as treasurer of the Royal Oak First Methodist Church, a position he also held at Covenant Church in Cuyahoga Falls. He worked for Burroughs for 35 years, retiring in 1980. After Margaret's death in 1996, he moved to West Lafayette, Indiana, to be near friends and family from his early life.
Bob was a quiet, independent man who liked companionship and enjoyed gardening. He was an extraordinarily meticulous handyman around his home, keeping everything in exceptional condition and building beautiful pieces of furniture for his family. He enjoyed exploring the out-of-doors with his family, visiting his daughters often as they grew up, moved away and established families of their own.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Gail N. Hunt, Sue Keller and Nannette Nesbitt; grandchildren Kimberly Hunt, John Hunt, David Holmberg, Sam Holmberg and Andrew Keller; brothers Gene Nesbitt and David Nesbitt; nieces and nephews Mark Nesbitt, Janet Nesbitt, Don Nesbitt, Jane Ferguson and Dick Nesbitt. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Nesbitt and nephew Bruce Nesbitt.
He is missed by all who have known and loved him and will not be forgotten.
