Obituary for Donald “Don” Pollitt

Donald George “Don” Pollitt, 90, of Plymouth, Michigan, formerly of Logansport, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2018, in Independence Village following a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born February 21, 1928, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late George and Edna Victoria Pollitt.

On September 22, 1956, in Logansport, he was married to Marjorie Ann (Brown) Pollitt, who survives.

Don came to the United States as a child when his father began working for a newspaper in Evanston, Illinois. After his elementary school days, Don's family moved to Pontiac. Illinois. As a prep basketball player, the 6-2 Pollitt and his Pontiac High School teammates went to the Illinois state finals.

During high school, Don worked on a farm for $11 a week and developed an interest in agriculture. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and served in Alaska during World War II.

In 1947, Don headed back home to major in agriculture at the University of Illinois. But working two jobs and going to school full-time took its toll and after two years, he moved to Logansport, where his father had taken a post as a foreman with the Pharos-Tribune. Don took a job with the local Coca-Cola bottling plant for a short time before he was hired as an ad salesman at the Pharos in 1948. Later, when the Pharos-Tribune acquired the Logansport Press, Don sold ads for both papers until the Press ceased publication.

Although business manager was the title he held for the last half of his career at the Pharos Tribune, Don had served as advertising manager and classified ad manager. The unofficial titles of purchasing agent, building supervisor and right-hand man to former Publisher Jud Druck were also in his job description at one time or another. On March 1, 1991, he retired after a 43-year career with the Pharos Tribune.

Don was an avid bowler and golfer. Along with Glen Peeples, Don built the Rolling Hills Par 3 Golf Course. Glen eventually sold his shares to Jim Jones and Tom Williams who owned and ran it with Don until it was sold. Don enjoyed working on older homes, and had managed and maintained 18 apartments. His interest in building continued with the construction of the Pharos-Tribune's new office in 1983. He designed much of the office and front counter areas.

Don was a former member of the Logansport/Cass County Chamber Of Commerce, Noon Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge No. 66 and had served as president of the former Optimist Club. He had also served on the board of Logansport Savings Bank from 1960 until his retirement. He and Marge enjoyed living in New Port Richey, Florida for many years before moving to Michigan to be closer to family.

Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Pollitt, of Plymouth, Michiagn; two daughters, Judy Pollitt (Matt) Wagner, West Lafayette, and Amy Pollitt (Mark) Zehr, Plymouth, Michigan; and five grandchildren: Donny Wagner, Clay Wagner, Austin Zehr, Ashley Zehr and Ryan Zehr.

Don was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Pollitt and, one sister, Elizabeth Pollitt Finley.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 PM Saturday, March 24 in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

At 4 PM, full military honors will be presented by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, the Cass County Honor Guard and the Patriot Guard in honor of Don's service to our country.
