Obituary for Donna Joy Cotner

Donna Joy Cotner, 89, Logansport, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 25, 2018, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born June 22, 1929, in Logansport, Donna was the daughter of the late Harvey and Bessie (Taylor) Berryman.

Donna was a 1947 graduate of Logansport High School. Music filled their home as children, so much so that she and her sisters, Alyce Murray and Juanita Wysong, formed the Berryman Trio and sang together most of their lives.

On June 1, 1947, in Logansport, she was married to Richard Cotner, who preceded her in death Aug. 14, 2006.

As a homemaker, Donna's role as wife, mother and servant of God defined her completely. Donna worked alongside her husband running the family business, Berryman Sales. When her boys were in Scouts, Donna was their den mother. Throughout their years in school, she was the mom who was always there to support their teachers and activities - which eventually led to a 16-1/2 year career as a matron at Franklin Elementary.

Donna devoted several years to the Weekday Religious Education Organization which ministered to school-age children in Cass County. Donna taught classes for six years, eventually becoming secretary of the WRE as the organization grew.

Being born and raised in the Helm Street Church of God, Donna served as an elementary Sunday School teacher from 1957-2007 before switching over to teach adult classes the past 10 years. In addition to singing with her sisters, Donna sang in the church choir, sang solos and served as a worship song leader. Donna had served in many capacities at Helm Street - director of Christian Education, Sunday School Superintendent and Missionary Program Director for the Women of the Church of God (WCG). In 2003, she served on the First Leadership Team of Helm Street Church of God, later to be called the Board of Deacons. Donna served several terms as a Deacon and Trustee. Her smile was a welcome sight as the ticket taker at many Helm Street chicken and noodle dinners over the years. A lifelong Christian, Donna lived and exemplified her beliefs every day.

Surviving are two sons, Dennis (Sharon) Cotner, Williamsburg, Virginia and David (Donna) Cotner, Burnettsville; two grandsons, Michael (Jennifer) Cotner, Huntsville, Texas and Robert Cotner, Burnettsville; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Makayla Cotner; one sister, Alyce Murray, Logansport; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Juanita Wysong.

A funeral service celebrating Donna's life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 29, in the Helm Street Church of God with the Rev. Dean Snyder officiating. Interment will follow in the Indian Creek Cemetery.

Friends will be received 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 28, in Fisher Funeral Chapel. A visitation will also be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Helm Street Church of God, 711 Helm Street, Logansport, IN 46947.
