Obituary for Gwendolyn G. Holfelder

Gwendolyn G. Holfelder died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Tuesday, April 24, 2018.

Born on April 29, 1921 in Flushing, Long Island, NY, Gwen was the daughter of the late Wilson E. and Agnes Rockwood Griffiths. She was predeceased by her husband, Laurence G. Holfelder; sister, Katherine Jean Nerret; and great-grandson, Crew Buchanan.

After graduating high school, Gwen attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, after which she furthered her education at Westminster College in Pennsylvania.

On May 7, 1942, she and Laurence were married in Framingham, MA; shortly thereafter, he spent over three years serving in WWII. They were married for 57 years until his death in 1999.

Gwen was a member of the United Church of God. She and Laurence were loved in their congregation and attended their church in Lafayette for almost 50 years. She truly lived her faith and set an example for her family, passing on her love for God to succeeding generations.

Before she lost her eyesight, Gwen’s great passion was reading. One of her favorite quotes to her grandchildren was, “If you have a book, you have a friend.” She also enjoyed traveling, as well as just walking or biking throughout Lafayette.

Surviving are her daughters, Carol (Brad) Rosenquist of Nashville, TN, Elizabeth (Doug) Jones of Lafayette, and Linda (Charles) Graby of Cumming, Georgia.

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Fisher Funeral Chapel, Lafayette, on Monday, April 30, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Michael Grovak officiating. Entombment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Guardian Angel Hospice in memory of Gwen.
