Obituary for Karen Gilman Lauterbach

Karen Gilman Lauterbach, 88, of West Lafayette, died on Friday, January 5, 2018, at Westminster Village.

She was born January 22, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa to Henry and Karen (Haakinson) Gilman. She graduated high school from St. Mary’s Episcopal School in Faribault, MN, received her bachelor's degree from Smith College and attended graduate school at the University of Illinois where she met her husband.

She married Edward Stewart Lauterbach on August 11, 1956, in Sioux City, Iowa, who preceded her in death in 2009.

More than a homemaker, Karen enjoyed family, reading, and volunteering and was the go-to-person for projects she was involved with. After her children left home she became an English instructor at Purdue University.

Karen was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, (altar guild) and later the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. Often co-chairing their annual book fairs, she was active in The Friends of the West Lafayette Public Library. As a member of Psi Iota Xi, Karen enjoyed working on their Halloween fundraiser the “Ghostly Gallery”. She and her husband helped reestablish the Illustrious Clients of Indianapolis, a Sherlock Holmes club, and for many years she was the only soap maker at the Feast of the Hunter’s Moon.

Surviving her are sons, Stewart (Judy) Lauterbach of Kokomo, IN and C. Chandler (Rebecca) Lauterbach of Sheridan, IN, her brother, Dr. Chandler (Gillian) Gilman of Pecos, NM, and her grandchildren, Eric (Virginia) Lauterbach and Molly Lauterbach.

Contributions may be made in her name to the West Lafayette Public Library.

A Memorial Service in the spring for family and friends will be announced.
