Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

This is unchartered territory, but we're prepared and well-trained in consideration of the safety and protection of our community and our staff.

UPDATED 1/20/2021 Governor Eric Holcomb has pushed much of Indiana, including Cass and Tippecanoe counties, back to the Stage 4 Orange level due to a surgence in Covid-19 cases.  All persons age 8 and over are required to wear a mask in public places which includes gatherings such as funerals and visitation. Masks are now suggested at outdoor gathering as well as social distancing being maintained, In some cemeteries, masks are mandatory.  Keep in mind, this is in compliance with not only our County Health Departments, but the Federal Government, for the health and safety of our community. We will be able to accomodate gatherings up to 50 people.

From the Governor's guidelines: "Funeral homes, crematories and morticians are essential providers and authorized to perform within their scope of duty to take charge and remove deceased persons from their places of death, prepare a deceased person for final disposition in any manner and make arrangements, provided that such arrangement comply with Indiana’s Back on Track and social distancing guidelines. Religious services, including funerals, will no longer be subject to limits on social gatherings. However, social distancing and other sanitation measures will continue to apply. Visitations or other gatherings before or after funerals remain subject to the limitations and restrictions for social gatherings." Last Updated 11/16/2020 Page 2 of 10 For additional information, visit https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/  So, while there are no limits the numbers of attendees at the actual funeral service - crowds of up to 50 people at one time, are allowed dbefore and after the funeral service.

The VA Cemeteries are still limiting attendance and masks are required.  Because many people use our building - some are fighting cancer and other diseases that compromise their immunity, some have traveled from out-of-state locations identified as hotspots, and many have been in hospital waiting rooms - the risk of spreading COVID-19 is obvious.  We do not want to be "mask police" we just ask that for the short time you are in attendance at a service or visitation that you please observe this rule to keep our guests and our staff safe. We also recognize that some people can not wear masks for health reasons.

In all situations, we ask that any person with a fever or any symptoms of illness - PLEASE stay home and be respectful of the health of the grieving families we serve as well as our staff. Please use the provided hand sanitizers before greeting the family at visitations/services and also keep in mind, some families may not want to be greeted with hugs and handshakes.  If that is the case, a sign will be posted at our entrance. Elbow bumps and ((virtual hugs)) are fine. At this time, we are not allowing food to be brought in to the lounge.

We will work with each family on an individual basis to determine the best course of action regarding visitations and funeral services. In recent months, this has included postponing public services, staggered visitation times in small groups to allow all family members and close friends time to grieve, holding private family-only services with a celebration of life at a later date - with no extra fee, practicing safe "social distance" measures at outdoor graveside services, or services by invitation-only with live streaming of the ceremony online. We will keep you informed at all times. Regarding funerals held at a church, each church will have their own re-opening guidelines - often under the direction of their own denomination's state or national leadership. Social distancing will still need to be in place wherever the service is held.

We honor each person's life with an online memorial page that features an expanded version of obituaries, a photo album, video tributes and a Tribute Wall. The Tribute Wall is a permanent online site for you to interact with the family. It can be printed out like a guestbook for those family members who are not on the internet. Unlike Facebook, everyone can read the posts - even in years to come - it is a place to come and remember. You can light virtual candles, share memories and photographs, view the video Tribute and offer words of comfort and hope.

Please pray for our Nation's leaders, scientists, researchers and medical community for a breakthrough in the protection from and the treatment of this virus.

The Message version of Romans 8:2 translates this familiar verse quite well, "Every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good."

May the good that comes out of this situation make us better people - kinder, gentler and more respectful of each other...because life is too short. And tomorrow is never promised.
