Obituary for Dawney "Kay" Falley

Dawney “Kay” Falley, 81, died on Saturday, July 21, 2018 in Lafayette, Indiana due to lung cancer. She was born November 14, 1936 to Raymond Joseph and Alma Frances Mock in rural Kansas. She is survived by her daughter, Chris Falley (Belinda Long); grandchildren, Logan Falley and Emma Falley; her sister, Sue Kelsey; brother-in-law, Basil Kelsey; and nieces and nephews
In her early years, farming, church, 4-H and family were a big part of her life. Later she would be in band at high school and work for the music store of Ottawa, Kansas. She had a love of music, particularly jazz, the rest of her life.
Kay married Donald L. Falley in 1957, and was widowed at 31. She relied on her grit and determination to go to college so she could support herself and her daughter. Completing her bachelor’s degree in Corrections at Washburn University, she began working for the court system as a juvenile probation officer. Later she attended graduate school at Kansas State University and got her Master’s in Counseling. She left the court system for a short time to be the administrator of Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, but returned to her professional home, the courts, as the Court Administrator (first in Franklin County and then in Shawnee County) where she stayed for over 25 years. She was deeply committed to the courts and loved the work. She retired in 2004.
After retirement, she relocated to Indiana where her grandchildren were and became a professional soccer cheerleader, swimming and diving aficionado when she wasn’t volunteering for Master Gardeners, Lilly Nature Center, her homeowner’s association, or Central Presbyterian Church. Her most precious volunteering was as a Volunteer Advocate for her guardianship clients through Family Services. One client, Roland, she was very committed to and worked with many years until his death.
Planting (she was a Master Gardner) and pottery became her favorite pastimes and her favorite companions were her pets, so in light of this, please make a donation in her name to the Humane Shelter, your local Master Gardner Chapter, or the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette (ATTN: Pottery , 102 S. 10th, Lafayette, IN 47905.)

A small, private family memorial service will be planned at a future date.

Kay's family would like to thank Creasy Springs for their exceptional care of her.
